Yeah, BMI isn't a really great indicator.

To illustrate, probably the fittest dude I know is the same height as me and weighs ~220 lbs. About 4 months ago I weighed the same as him, and according to BMI we were both obease. I have now gotten down to ~195 lbs, so my BMI is much lower than his, but he is by a fairly wide margin in much better shape than me.
