Man I grew up in the 90's (entered high school in 1997) in Brandon Manitoba and my childhood mirrors a lot of your own. Including the stupid "oh man, how did we not die or get arrested" stories.
One particular incident I remember from my early teen years was when my buddy came across about 1/2 a container of gun powder in his parent's garage. In started out simply enough, dump some on the ground, light it on fire and go

whooooo
Of course the piles kept getting bigger & bigger, and we started fill things like film containers and pringles cans before lighting them etc. Eventually we managed to fill his entire garage with smoke, like a LOT of smoke. Then we saw his mom's vehicle passing the back of the house.
"Shoot! we need a distraction!"
So we closed the front door of the garage and climbed onto the roof of the garage. She gets home and immediately ask:
"what the hell are you doing on the roof!" "uhh just hanging out, we're bored" "Get down from there and stay off the roof!" and she stormed into the house without giving the garage a second look.
