Default Stolen vehicles cause mayhem in Calgary, CPS shoot and kill one

Bizarre story last night out of Whitehorn and all over the NE/NW...

Quote:
At a news conference Thursday morning, Calgary police described a chain of events leading up to the shooting:

Police units were following two stolen trucks through Calgary and used spike belts in an attempt to stop both vehicles.

After the belt disabled one of the trucks, occupants climbed into the second truck and fled.

The second truck was followed to Whitehorn, where a man and woman got out. The man ran into a random backyard, confronted an officer with a screwdriver, and was fired upon, police said. The woman was later arrested nearby.

Police at the news conference wouldn't disclose further details of the shooting itself, pending the outcome of the ASIRT investigation.

The officer who fired the shot is a 10-year veteran of the police force and a member of the police tactical unit.

Meanwhile, the driver of the pickup, who never left the stolen vehicle, sped away from the Whitehorn scene and ended up driving on the wrong side of 16th Avenue, police said.

Pursuing police vehicles boxed in the suspect truck at the intersection of 16th Avenue and University Drive N.W., but the driver refused to step out of the vehicle.

After the canine police unit failed to flush the driver from the pickup, officers hit the suspect with a rubber bullet. He was arrested at the scene and is in custody facing charges, as is the woman taken into custody at the earlier location.
There's a video in the Herald link which is quite interesting with comments from Chief Hanson...unfortunately, I can't embed it.
