Yeah, the mattress can have that much of an impact. Fortunately I had the "let her pick the mattress" lesson on a $300 bed; and now I know better.
One option; go over to
Halstead and have them show you what they can do with foam. It may be possible to get something to put over the mattress; or even between the mattress and box spring. They can even do sides of the bed; giving you something softer and your wife harder.
And see- I gave you some advice without resorting to a comment that your wife likes it harder than you are able to provide.
