Prior to agents we had a system where each team could protect one or two UFAs and the rest hit the market automatically.
RFAs were done with negotiations between the GMs and the league - it was very hard to manage. An offer sheet system also in place that allowed other GMs to bid - but it created a lot of hard feelings.

A lot of hard feelings and a lot of work I imagine. I'm glad it's changed. Currently, there are very few things I would change.
