I do all the updates that it recommends I do, and I wonder if it just can't handle the newest software so well anymore. Here are the stats on the unit:

Model Name: MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz

I am running Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K540)...

I'm not sure how relevant any of that information is. But is there anything I can do to help the performance on the Macbook? Or is it simply getting old?
if the fan is running all the time and its noticeably slower (like really slow), it could just need an SMC reset - google how to do that for your particular model. The SMC controls cooling and CPU throttling, and if it gets out of whack you can see similar issues.

My guess though is its probably clogged up with dust, at that age.
