I don't think that people should ignore life/death phone calls at all, so let's just get that out of the way. But how many of those calls are we really talking about? 1/10,000? I've yet to experience one personally, thankfully.

We've all seen a couple people sitting at a table looking at their phones instead of talking to the people they're sitting with....it's ridiculous.
I'm onboard with the opinion that being on your phone while you're out is rude. I can't stand it, and I don't do it. That doesn't mean restaurants should block calls, that's not their business. Emergencies (work or personal) do happen. Lots of oil field jobs depend on being on call, and while the chances of getting called could be low; they still happen. Even my job can and will call at inopportune times, and if I miss the call then I don't go to work. I'm not going to just sit at home and not have a social life because of a chance I get called in. There is a huge difference between "social" use of the phone and actual work related use. People that text/browse the internet while out with friends are annoying and rude, that I will agree.
