When the person that sends the first message has the advantage of composing it with as much editing time as he or she wants, then it's only fair that the person replying gets to consider the response for as long as he or she wants before hitting send.
If I get a nicely composed request to help someone move, it's only fair that I get to take a minute or two to either decide that I'd like to help that person, or else to decline tactfully. Telling someone to stuff it isn't always the right way to say no to someone.
And then there's those situations when a poor decision from the previous weekend starts texting for some more action. I'm the one paying the GD cell phone bill, I should have the luxury of pretending I didn't get the message.
