Well I'm not sure how serious these replies were meant to be, but if you've been paying attention to what's been happening in the East Village lately, you'd realize it's not the same place as it was 5 to 10 years ago. I'm not saying the old problems have disappeared, but I am saying they have probably been moved to a different part of the city.
The East Village was almost completely demolished and now with upgraded infrastructure and planning, many new projects are coming to light. I think in 5 to 10 years, you'll see that area as perhaps the most vibrant in Calgary.
The Riverwalk, the Cantos Music Center, new condos, and the new 6th Street underpass connecting the area to Victoria Park and the Stampede grounds, I think the East Village will be awesome to watch grow in the next few years.
The library going in this area is ideal, IMO.
One thing brought to light in the article I was unaware of was the extension of the Stephen Ave. walk into the East Village. That is one more thing that will help connect the East Village to the rest of the core, something it has lacked in past decades.
