I agree, but you could of said the same thing about the Tim Burton Batman films. They were both very dark when compared to say the Superman movies, but they obviously went in a different more family friendly direction when Joel Schumacher was given permission to ruin the series.
The only movies that had higher box office figures in the 80's then Burton's Batman were either Star Wars entries, or movies directed by Steven Spielberg. Despite all this success Warners went in a different direction, and that gave us Batman Forever and Batman & Robin (ugh).
I could honestly see Warner's screwing up again and trying to reestablish Batman in a more PG rated environment, especially if they intend on using him in the Justice League movie.
They screwed up Batman once, and I could easily see them doing it again.
