I haven't watched Howse except on the videos, but IMO, Howse simply needs to reduce his body fat, get stronger, and eat better to improve his speed quite a bite. He's 5"11 and 205lb which is above optimal weight, but he hasn't hit the ice this off season yet (planning to start shortly), has been working out hard off ice with Rich Hesketh, and had to recover from some injuries after his season in Chilliwack ended. Howse is quite a bit bigger than Dawes or Cammaleri (both are 5'9), so he won't need to rely as much as Cammaleri does on being a dynamic skater to make room for himself. He plays a similar style to them, but if Dawes was Howse' size, he'd almost certainly still be in the NHL.
