I don't really agree with what you are saying here and think that the Stampede is an extremely important event for Calgary because it was designed to celebrate and remember our western heritage. A heritage that still plays a big part in the culture of Alberta.
I think the biggest issue that you have with the Stampede is that the actual event itself has lost some of its Western ideals and is now more about being a big drunken party then it is about celebrating Calgarys cowboy heritage.
I know that I personally wish that more empahsis was put on the Rodeo, Chuckwagon Races, hell even Nashville North as opposed to the Beer Gardens, Coke Stage, and what concert is coming to the Saddledome.
But I know that the Stampede has to promote these other events in order to draw more people in and have a bigger target demographic but I do think that the emphasis has strayed too far from the traditional Stampede aspects in the past couple years and that the board needs to recorrect that a little bit.
