Saw Xmen a couple days ago finally. After all the buzz and good reviews I had going in, it lived up to my high expectations. Clearly the best summer movie so far. Great characters, good story, good action and just an overall good movie. Not just a popcorn flick, not a guilty pleasure movie, I thought it was a good movie overall. After this movie, I've concluded that Magneto is the most interesting comic book character I have ever seen.
In comparison to Dark of the Moon, it is clearly better in every category except one or two. Now don't take this to mean I'm a Bay lover and I love explosions, and I'm only interested in loud bangs and all that crap, but the visuals in Trans3 were night and day to Xmen. I thought some of the effects in Xmen were pretty poor. Case in point, the aircraft the Xmen rode in, it just looked really fake and didn't move well. It reminded me of the crappy effects in the abomination that was GI Joe. I thought overall, the effects were sub par to be blunt. Transformers effects just seem to be a lot more crisp and fluid and were probably a lot harder to create as well.
Boxofficemojo has Transformers' budget at 195 million while Xmen was 160. I'm no special effects wizard, I don't know the inner details of production and what money is spent where, but with 160 million put into a movie with no genuine A list actors, I was expecting a lot more visually from Xmen. Transformers had huge sets, better effects and I got the feeling the producers spent their money a lot better.
Say what you will about the movies, but from a technical standpoint, Transformers blew Xmen out of the water.
