The problem is that the physical evidence pointed to OJ, the bloody gloves had his blood on them for example, and he fled. Meanwhile Jason who didn't cut himself with the knife, who's blood wasn't anywhere to be found wasn't looked at as a suspect. As soon as OJ jumped in the bronco there was a tunnel vision effect created by the prosecution.

Maybe he did it to give his son time to destroy the rest of the physical evidence that pointed to him. Maybe he knew he was boned even though his son did the killing and in his grief and depression decided to flee.
