No, it doesn't depend how you were brought up. It depends how street smart you are.
Some people need to be screwed over to realize that they always need to do their due diligence whenever they are involved in a deal. Others assume that they will be dealing with good and honest people. These people tend to need many lessons in this arena and usually wind up being screwed over HUGE before they learn their lesson. "But the guy on the phone said he only needed my credit card number to pay for incidental expenses on the free trip..."
