You can change the extension from .csv to .xls and it works fine.

edit: Whoops, didn't read your whole post Mango. If you CTRL+Click or right click on the .csv file, you can click Get Info. In the box that comes up, one of the things you can pick is Name & Extension. If you change it there from .csv to .xls, it will work. OSX will suggest you keep the extension to .csv, but you can change it anyways.

I just tested it on my Macbook and it works fine with Office 2008.
