I dont know for sure, but I have always assumed that with it being a single channel, they can get more audience by having a larger variety of shows to draw people in, and then use their in station advertising to keep them.
For example, - You hear Breaking Bad is a good show, so you start watching it. The you see advertising for Mad Men (or whatever other shows/movies AMC has) , that your idiot brother in law wont shut up about so you decide to check it out etc.
If they had 22-24 episodes like a 'regular' station, then it would give them less hooks to get people in.
I could be totally wrong though, never really looked into it.
