I'm away from Canada for awhile. I'm currently paying Rogers 30 bucks a month so that I can keep my phone number. More specifically, I'm subscribing to the lowest possible plan. That's the best they can do. Does anyone know of a company that I can switch my phone to that will transfer my old number, and allow me to get onto a pay as you go type plan? I'm using zero minutes per month, and am happy to pay 10 or 15 bucks just to keep the number (voicemail would be good too).

You probably won't be able to convert it, as we don't have number portability. So you won't be able to move the number to a different company, or to Pay as you Go.
However, Telus has 'vacation disconnect' which costs $8.95 + GST/month, and basically you keep the number active, but no features. (No voicemail either, so that sucks.) The biggest issue is that you're gone for so long. Our limit is 6 months/year.
