But, then you're just wasting time and money to renew earlier than you need to. If you do a 5 year renewal, you don't get 5 years added on to the validity, you get a passport that's valid for 5 years from the date you renew it.
It's bad enough that we're one of the few countries that only has a 5 year passport, there's no reason to turn it into a 4 year passport for no reason.
Plus, some time in 2012, the passports are going to be changing to include an RFID chip that will supposedly make them more secure, which, in theory should make getting into other countries easier. Also, the new passports will have a 10 year validity.
