The other issue, what is Pelech's potential ceiling at this point? He will be 24-years old with 5 NHL games under his belt come OCT. Adam Pardy? Third pairing 6th-7th defender? Replacement level?
You can get those guys pretty easily off the waiver wire or in free agency. That's the other issue as well, of course: Pelech is now waiver eligible, so you risk losing him if you try to move him up and down between the AHL and NHL. The catch-22 with that is: if he isn't claimed, he probably wasn't worth keeping. If he excels, then he'll likely be claimed if he's called up.
At this point it's worth asking what the point of keeping him around is I think.
