I would say it was more luck than anything. she was in the right place at the right time, just as Obama chose his opposite in Bideb (older, white, and catholic), McCain responded by choosing his opposite (younger female) while also trying to tap into the politically under represented (woman) to counter Obama's historic role.
It is too bad the republicans didn't have someone like Hilary to take the position, as Palin may set back the potential of female politicians. As for cliches, they often contain a kernel of truth. Bush was like Klein, not overly intelligent but a good populist. Palin is a special case of tapping into a hardcore right group and getting major publicity because of the vp nomination. She is woefully underprepared
