There's a couple of ways to go. First, you can "squeeze" the remaining background together or, what I did, was grabbed another section of "usable" background and paste it in over top of the "hole". In either case, there's a subtle art to blending the two parts, and especially the seam where they join, in a way that helps mask the edit. This picture was tough because of all the detail in the background....a simple background or a less busy pattern is easier.
