I would tend to agree. Unless you just saved something to the drive, or have something open there is really no reason to eject it. I doubt the 2 acts are directly related, since I am guessing it is a physical problem with the drive or the usb connector that caused the problem. So it could have happened if anyone pulled the drive out.
If someone has some evidence to the contrary, I would gladly consider it though.
