The thing you clearly don't understand about the Wii U is that you don't have to use the controller in any gimmicky way. Any developer could just ignore it's features, make use of it's almost Dual-Shock 3 button layout and port whatever multi-platform game over and it'd play exactly the same as on the PS3 or 360 (or better depending on how much better the graphics are).

The easiest application to hardcore games is there should be no HUD on any game on the Wii U. Inventory systems should be much improved with the touch screen and integrated into the gameplay (ie; no pausing when looking through your inventory). There's plenty of simple, not intrusive things that could be done to improve hardcore games and that's something that none of these "gimmicks" (Wii Remote, Kinect, PS Move) have shown they can do.
I would agree with you if they didn't make it such a centralized part of the launch and based the whole idea around it. In the end you could be right but I think that since they are basing it as one of the main features of the new system it will be used in more gimmicky ways.

I will agree that if they use it as a secondary tool to just support games it will be a success, but it will fail it they try to make it a core feature of games.

Also I do not think the system will be a failure, it will be a success due to Mario/Zelda alone driving sales, but I do think that Nintendo could have implemented this system much better.

I think a major issue is the size of the controller, and eventually will be the cost of other controllers. A controller with a built in 9.5 inch touch screen will not come cheap, if you start charging people $100+ per extra controller they will start to shy away from the system.

Also why is the thing the size of a laptop. Really a controller the size of and more similar in design to the new PSP would have probably been sufficient enough. Personally to me the controller is very ugly looking, and is just too big. And if there is anything hardcore gamers are picky about it is the shape and size of their controller. That controller to me does not look like something that ill be comfortable, and easy to hold for hours at a time.
