Usually when me and the family drive to Vancouver, we like to take the old #1 west out of Kamloops, through Cache Creek, and then down the Fraser canyon.
It only adds about a half day, but well worth it IMO. You just get more of a sense of the changing landscape as you come out of the interior, into the lower mainland. Hell's Gate is always cool to stop at, especially when it's 35+, like it tends to get in July.
Along with that, we drive the #7 from Hope to North Van. A really nice rustic landscape with great views of the Fraser. Beats the hell out of that sightless stretch of tarmac past Chilliwack.
