I think he would have happily'ish signed with the Flames, he wanted to go to New York, that was all, it was an astute move by his agent, who no doubt started the conversation with him by asking 'do you care where you end up if you don't go to the Rangers?' once the kid said no then the plan was easy.
I doubt the Rangers had much more to do with it than getting word from the agent that his client would love to play for them and wasn't going to sign with Calgary (probably via the dad to avoid any tampering allegations).
