Based on what I've seen from my parents cat who started doing the same thing around 12 years old: Age. They get old, they get weird.

A couple things you might want to rule out first:

1) Have you changed the brand of litter you use?
2) Do you keep the box clean? (In my parents case, they now have to clean it daily because the cat will not use it if its not 100% fresh and clean)
3) Have you changed the food you are feeding it?
4) Medical Issues (Urinary Tract Infection or Crystals)

One other thing, it could be stress. I believe you were in the area hit hard by tornado's. Animals are affected by stress and if there was alot of moving around because of it, it could just simply be them acting out. Or if people in the house are still edgy or stressed, for some reason animals can sense it and act out.
