The Millennium-series (which "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is the first part of) has sold 40 million copies and counting, making it a bestseller in the blow-your-mind scale, considering it's only a few years old and it's not even out in many countries where it will inevitably be published.
I thought you had to live in a cave to not know what it's about. But I guess the North America counts as a cave when it comes to culture-not-originally-in-English.
Not your fault, obviously.
Personally I've only read the first one (Which is originally titled "Men who hate women", but this was considered too provocative for the English speaking market.)
I thought it was okay, but if you haven't read anything in the "nordic noir" style of crime books, I guess the experience would be different. I hear the next two are better, putting Lisbeth Salander as the actual main character.
