Atlanta Off Season Report.
First off let me start by saying "Thanks" to the guys who allowed me to be a part of this league. There is a ton of new stuff to learn coming from the only other league I have been involved with. This league seems a lot more organized and the people in charge seem more intelligent and morally sound than the last league I was in. I shall enjoy my time here. Please bear with me as I am still working on figuring things out about how the day to day operations go around here. Thanks guys!
As for the state of the Thrashers … At first glance it seemed like maybe I had bit off a bit more than I could chew here. The previous GM apparently had the strategy of “Go for Broke”! It seems as if he was ready to win it all or move on. Sadly, he didn’t win it all and left the “Winnipeg” Thrashers in a mess!
The outlook for the upcoming season is grim to say the least. I am not gonna sugar coat things. Its not looking good. I was fully resigned to fact that I was going to have to rebuild , however its tough to rebuild with zero picks and a less than average set of prospects. Usually a team that is horrible at least has the silver lining of getting a high pick in the following draft. Sadly there is no silver lining here as that pick has also been traded by previous ownership.
After looking at our roster , our CPHL team is going to have to be filled using free agency. Approx 60% of our CPHL roster are slated to be UFA this summer. I will be looking at icing a younger team that will give the prospects their shots at making a splash with the big club. I have already made a few moves in my time here. I traded 600k in Cap space to the Kings for a 3rd round pick. I then traded that 3rd round pick for essentially (LW) Stefan Della Rovere. The deal also saw the Thrashers send (G) Cedrick Desjardins , (C) Phil Desimone to Colorado for (G)Scott Wedgewood , (RW) Jon Rheault and a 5th round pick.
On the block: everyone! But really I am looking to trade the rights to most of my UFA for picks or prospects. Notable Thrashers include Tim Connolly , Pascal Dupuis, Cleary, Barrett Jackman, and Nikolai Khabibulin.
