I live in the neighbourhood, and it seems to be a daytime problem. In the evenings and weekends I never really see much going on. All the break-ins are during the day, and some of you will remember my problems with that last year. So far in 2011 there has only been one residential break in:

I think the big problem is the Edmonton Trail corridor, where there is some low income housing and some definite transient activity. The corner of 1st Ave and Edmonton Trail is constantly having cops come in and crack down on the sketchos. Oddly enough, the further East you go in the neighbourhood, the better it gets. I have noticed a TON of cops lately, and now I know why.
I just ran the crime stats for the last 6 months and Hillhurst had more offenses. So it seems to be in line with other areas close to downtown. I'm glad they are working to get rid of the people that no one wants around though. In Hillhurst you have a lot more "normal" people walking around to make you feel comfortable if you encounter one of the criminals.
