Ernie-my thoughts go out to you and everyone who is down there right now. My husband has been working in Joplin as a government contractor for weatherization projects for the State of Missouri for the past three months, and they had plans to work there for the next two years. Someone from his work crew is missing still, but the rest are okay. He was supposed to be driving out (from KC) this morning but obviously now he will not be going.
Saturday night we had the sirens going off in Overland Park for a couple of hours with really odd sounding thunder and weird lightning/heavy rain, but I didn't really think anything of it because the sirens here go off so often, it's like a smoke alarm with a bad battery. Joplin has seen the worst tornado since the early 50s, and my heart breaks for them.
We will be sending clothing this week as well, and we have several friends who will be doing the 'closet clean out' too, and sending their things with my husband.
So, so sad. I am so sorry about your friends. Thankfully they're okay. Hopefully the storms in the next few days won't be as horrible.
