People go to be seen, make an appearance so others in town won't gossip about them, figure out what that latest buzzwords/catchphrases are that can distinguish them from other churches/non practicing folks, etc.
Conveniently, the late service is finishing up at the exact same time the race or the football game starts... Serendipity.
It's really quite comical, or tragic. However you choose to look at it.
