Jim never wanted to work at Dunder Mifflin, and assumed there would be no way he'd stick around for long. Also Michael has said a few times that he used to be just like Jim; now Jim will be just like Michael.
Dwight should become the manager imo. One of the reasons I loved the British version is that Gavin was promoted to manager, and not Tim. But, it's not that shocking that the American version would promote the cookie cutter boring straight man.

Honestly, I don't overly care who becomes manager, as long as there are more Jim-Dwight pranks because that was the highlight of the show for me.
