Bit of a different situation because while people could have no content insurance, the building itself was still insured so while people might be out a couch and their computer, they wouldn't be left homeless.
I was living in the condos next to it when that fire happened, I remember sitting on the grass across the road by the Talisman center watching the firemen put out cinders that were landing on the roof of our building and watching the helicopter grab water from the river to dump on the fire, and near me was a guy on the phone to his insurance agent trying to get his "super expensive" Persian rugs added to his policy.. while he watched the fire try to spread across the street to his condo lol.
He didn't get it, they had a 24 hour clause or something.
I also got money from the government twice for repairs due to basement flooding. And I lived on a big hill, never thought it would ever be an issue. But that's a situation were I can't buy insurance, so not comparable either.
