I remember taking a course on end of the world prophesies in religious studies and one of the things that was brought up was that it the human mind (or ego, I suppose, however you want to define it) has such a feeling or permanence that it is actually easier for it to believe that the world will end before it does. Even if the logical brain knows this can't be true. That's why so many people can get sucked up into it, and have been since the beginning of recorded history.

The same sort of feeling occurs in beliefs of afterlife. The impossibility to imagine existence without us being there.
