Pretty much everything Hulkrogan said for gear.

I used my ski helmet and ski goggles for the cold days, make sure you have very light tinted ones, dark tinted goggles give you zero visibility.

If you can't afford the winter tires (they can be a little expensive), I found that letting out a little air from my tires helped. I would also recommend lowering your seat so that it is easier to put your feet down if needed.

Lights are a must, get some whites for the front, reds for the back and if they can flash that is the way to go.
