Default Question about cell phone use in South Korea

Does anyone know if it's possible to use my unlocked HTC Legend in South Korea? I'll be heading there in 2 weeks.

From what I've been reading, it sounds like you can't just buy a SIM card and chuck it into your phone, like most of the developed world. It sounds like they have a whitelist of IMEI numbers that restricts the use of foreign phones in S. Korea, even if it's unlocked. Does anyone know if this is still true, or if my info is dated? If so, would I be better off renting a phone at the Incheon Airport?

Also, with regards to renting, do they rent out smart phones with data plans? And are they GPS-enabled?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
