It actually is a popular rumour, they even talk about it on the US radio shows.
Supposedly two NBA officials were being shopped by the NHL, and they desperately wanted to keep the other one, so they endorsed Gary.
There's some other funny theories about it too, the NBA was worried about the NHL catching up in popularity, etc., so he did his best to make sure his buddy Gary got the job on the other side.
All that said, I assume they are just that, rumours. I doubt there is much validity to them.
But it does come up from time to time, not just up here, but in discussions down in the States too.
With all the CBA and strike/lockout talk going on in all the leagues right now, I've actually heard it a few times on Jim Rome, Jason Smith, Fox Sports, etc.
