Bin Laden and 9/11 have hung like a spector over America for a decade. People blame it for the end of optimism, and the feeling of vulnerability that American's were truly never prepared for or bought up with. Even during the Cold War when America had thousands of nukes pointed at it, they were still fortress America.

I would think the last time America had that heightened sense of fear pre 9/11 was the Cuban Missile Crisis.

This was an instinctive emotional release.

This was pure joy at seeing a mass murderer heading for the grave.

To a lot of people, this was this generations equivalent to the sailor kissing the nurse in Time Square when WWII ended.

Not everything has to be about sober reflection, but when I watched the news and saw the people outside of the white house, I didn't see a lot of over the top celebrations. I saw happy, relieved people.
