According to the Birthers a certificate of live birth isn't enough proof to even get a passport. The reason is the certificate only records information about a new born and can be filled out without any knowledge of where the child was born. If you lived in a remote location, or used a midwife, or delivered while out of the country you could go to a doctor and get a certificate of live birth. That form along with proof of location of birth and/or identification of the parents would be enough to get a birth certificate.

Obama's mother is thought to have been as young as 17 when she had Obama. According to State law at the time a child born to her out of country would have the same citizenship as his Father. Don't know if that was true but, it is what they were saying.

The question of John McCain's eligibilty was raised the first time he decided to run for President. His parents were both Americans but, he was born out of country on a military base. Obviously some then reasoned that natural born meant on US soil. When it was pointed out that a US base anywhere was US soil the question died.
