I dunno about you guys, but my parents weaned me onto alcohol at a fairly early age with drinks here and there. By the time I was 18, i knew how to handle my alcohol responsbly, and didnt go out and get sh*tfaced just because I could.

That's exactly like me. One of the greatest lessons my parents taught me was to treat alcohol as a beverage to be enjoyed, not a tool to get tanked off of.
It's exactly like you said, the more "forbidden" it is, the faster they'll reach for the bottle and drink with others not experienced with alcohol - which can be very dangerous when you don't know how to drink responsibly. Such a high drinking age, IMO, will lead to further alcohol abuse.
