I do that too, for two reasons: The one in the front has been pawed over by other people (not necessarily true), and stores rotate their stock to ensure the older product is in the front, so by taking stuff from the back of the shelf, you're getting newer stock.
I also hate buying the last item on the shelf.
Also, when I buy milk or anything else with a Best Before date on it, I'll always buy the one with the latest expiration date, even if it's something I know I'll consume long before that date arrives.
