Most players spend about 1/3rd of their lives in the city they play in, the other 2/3rds is on the road or at their offseason place, I think 'the city' means very little to players, the organization means everything.

The Canucks spent many years not being able to attract free agents but it was because the team was cheap and badly run, Vancouver itself is likely one of the best cities to live in in the league and always has been. That said Loungo still 'lives' in Florida and just keeps a place in BC for the season, on top of that he attends goalie camp in the summer in Ontario I believe.

Hockey players are very well paid nomads, I doubt very many would mind Winnipeg anymore than Columbus or Minny.
