It's not a need, but it's fantastic for leaving in the living room to pick up for random use. A lot better in this regard then a laptop.

If I was in the situation where I could only have one thing... it wouldn't be picked over a laptop.. or a desk top... but if you want one, and can justify the expense to yourself or the wifey, go for it.
I feel this is a good comment on the necessity of the iPad. I'd probably pick one over a laptop, but beyond that I'd rather have a desktop or even an iPhone first. It's a fantastic secondary device. Replacing everything with an iPad could be quite frustrating, but adding it to your line of computers works out quite well.

It fits really well into that "oh man I don't want to go get my laptop" space.

As for using it in the workplace I love having it. It's functional enough to have everything within a few taps in a meeting while also being small enough to keep out of your way. I also like that the battery is strong so you aren't always hunting for a plugin.

I take all my notes in evernote so that when I'm done not only is it available on every computer I own (phone included), but when I need to retrieve a note I can do a search for keywords. I always took notes before in a book and lost them.

Edit: Holy crap the playbook came out today? I haven't heard anything. Anybody have one?
