That's great, but even more satisfying is gearing down from 5th to 3rd to slow down and hold speed for a corner or whatever, then hammering on it and gearing up again.
WRT spending $50K on a car...if you buy a $50K car and your other crap is covered first (money is still being put away for retirement, mortgage is being chipped away at nicely or is paid off, any other debts have been wiped clean or are at least being paid down, etc.), go for it. I think a fancy car should be after those other things. And if you have kids a fancy car should come after education fund savings and the other expenses it takes to provide a kid or kids with a nice upbringing (sports, clubs, new bikes, etc.).
There's a reason if you do it right only well-to-do people drive fancy cars. With easy access to debt now and the sense of entitlement a lot of people have, you see people in cars they can't afford all the time. Those people are dopes.
