I can honestly say my few experiences with Police officers, they have been professional. Campus Cops are an entirely different story.
Back a few years ago, I lived in Calgary for 20 months. I received a CTrain ticket, as I was new in town, and had forgot to validate my ticket downtown. I went to the Transit station and asked for more time to pay it off. Unfortunately, I was lazy and only paid off half the ticket, so unbeknown to me, there was a warrant out for my arrest.
I was on the Library computers at the U of C, when the Campus cops did their routine check at around 10 PM. Since I was a visitor, I gave them my ID. When I realized they ran my name through the computer, and the warrant came up. I realized this, and since I had to work at my job the next morning, I asked for my ID back, and was walking off to the bus stop. I was thinking "s**t! I got to go to Transit tomorrow and pay that off!"
A couple of the officers came to the bus stop, and asked me to come back first thing tomorrow morning. One of the Campus Cops was definitely roided up, as his eyes were glossy and he was way too big for his frame. I asked what it was about. He replied "just to talk". I refused, as he was inches away from my face trying to intimidate me, and knowing that they had no jurisdiction outside the campus, I simply started walking to 24th Ave.
The Campus cop proceeded to follow me from behind a foot away, saying that he called the Police etc etc. Once I crossed 24th southbound, he stopped and waited for a fellow Campus cop to catch up. To my amazement, he then crossed 24th Ave and was walking towards me (Campus Police are not allowed to leave the University property, unless you committed a crime on Campus).
So the Police came, and I stopped, and simply said "sorry Should have paid the Ctrain ticket...lol" So the Calgary Police simply handcuffed me for a brief moment, tossed me in the back, and just told me to pay at the station and I could go- simple as that."
Meanwhile the roided up Campus police dude is telling the officers that he needed a picture of me, and wanted to talk to me for a couple of minutes. The officer told the Campus cop "Sir, don't interfere with us while we are trying to do our job." The Campus cop looked like he was about to explode, he was so angry.
He yelled "You're banned from Campus! If I ever see you on University property, you will be arrested!" The officer told him to go away, and I could hear the Police officer saying to his partner "what the hell is wrong with that guy?" It was amusing to say the least.
To make a long story short, I went down to the station, paid the ticket and was on my way by midnight. I phoned the Head of campus security the following day and told him about the incident. He believed me, and said I was free to be on University property as long as I had no warrants, and the Campus cop dude had made a "mistake."
So I guess the moral of the story is don't be stupid and pay your CTrain ticket on time...lol.
