Cst. Randy Kuntz maintains 92 per cent of the 2,631 law enforcement officials he surveyed through the law enforcement magazine Blue Line are against the initiative, arguing it is useless, inaccurate and even deadly.
"Where the boot-meets-the-pavement type police man who meet with the public every day - overwhelmingly there is not support for this registry," said Kuntz.
He believes the reason for the negative response lies with the firearms database. Kuntz says while it shows weapons and their owners, it doesn't tell officers where the firearms are actually located. That means there's no way to assure a firearm is actually in the possession of the person who registered it.
"It hasn't saved anybody. In fact it can be dangerous because if you rely on the information in the firearms registry, as a police officer that could be a foolish thing to do and it could cost you your life."
