Everybody knew he wasn't going to be an every day player. If anything having him retire would make one of your young guys get the chance to step up and excel into the role or fail miserably and you can trade for someone else. Having manny leave doesn't throw a team under the bus since everyone prepared going into it that he could be a liability and if it worked out great if it didn't not that big of a deal and move on.
