I just modified a unit in our bedroom closet. It was similar to what you are doing. I used that 3/4" Pine shelving you can buy at Rona/Home Depot in different widths and lengths. I used a biscuit joiner to put it together. Primed it and Painted it. I think I spent about $100 dollars to modify the existing closet. California Closets quoted me $1100 to tear out the old and put in a new one.
