Acer's Timeline product line are solid machines. I've probably owned and worked extensively on about 20 laptops over my lifetime and my current Acer Timeline 3820TG is possibly the best value out of all of them. Ultraportable, decent LED backlit monitor, good/great graphics chip, 8 hour battery, all for around $600.
Granted, their entry level stuff is crap.
I had one very good and 3 below average Dells.
I had one Asus with an awful, awful display and weighed a ton.
I had one Gateway that was an absolute beast to carry around but it chewed up games for dinner and never once gave me a problem.
Had one Sony Vaio which was a really nice looking machine and performed well but I didn't really think it justified the price at the time.
I've got a buddy at work that swears up and down by Lenovo. I quite like his. It's got an understated design, pretty professional looking, and is apparently a little powerhouse.
Samsung has some very promising looking machines coming out this year. The 9 series looks seeeeexy.
